Cable Railing Systems
Cable railing is safety railing that use horizontal or vertical cables in place of spindles, glass, mesh, etc. This type of railing is most often used when an unobstructed view is desired. The cable railing can be installed in either metal or wood posts, depending on the customer’s likes. Horizontal or vertical cable solutions for railing are an excellent way to achieve a modern look while still maintaining the functionality of traditional railing. Cables also require considerably less maintenance and upkeep than traditional railing systems.
There is a considerable amount of load requirements necessary for cable railing; and because of this, the way the posts are constructed is crucial. The posts should be quite rigid and firm to be able to withstand the amount of force that is applied to the post as a result of the tension of the cables. This is why wood and metal are typically used as posts, because these types provide the most support and rigidity.
For residential railings, the typical diameter of the cables used are either 1/8″ or 3/16″; and 3/16″ and 1/4″ for commercial railings. The strand of cable comes in several different options including stainless steel. The most common cable construction is 1×19 type strand, which houses 19 cables twisted into one bundle.
There are various requirements for constructing the cables, including the spacing between cables, the construction of the top rail, diameter of the cables, post spacing, and cable tension. These requirements vary depending on the state and location in which the cable railing will be placed.
